Bird watching is sleeping giant for PNG Tourism

Bird watching is sleeping giant for PNG Tourism

Eco tourism is a thriving economic sector in PNG with the potential of boosting PNG economy to a whole new level given its natural environment with its unique animal species.

About 75 percent of the PNG landmass is covered with tropical rainforest giving an edge to all kinds of animal species and spectacular landscapes for tourism attraction.

With that in mind the PNG Highlands Exotic Tours intends to promote and market the highlands-based tourism products by helping individuals, SMEs and organizations to write featured articles for their tourism products and publish on its website, blog, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, TripAdvisor, Lonely Planet, 7 Summits Club, Google plus and on the wider Internet.

Bird watching and orchid gardening is another exciting prospect in the eco tourism sector with an average of 8 bird watching companies visiting various bird watching sites in the Highlands region recently.

The PNG Highlands Exotic Tours come across an amazing individual wishing to set up to launch his career into bird watching and orchid gardening specialist. Max Mal, a middle aged man from Angi village, Wapenamanda District in the Enga Province was a bird watcher guide with the Kumul Lodge Tour Guide team in the highlands for the last seven (7) years.

He is well versed with the different species of birds and knows how to identify the sounds and tunes of different bird species. “I can tell from their sound if they want to sleep, or when they are happy, mourning/crying or when they are angry,” said Mr. Mal proudly.

“I have long wished to start up my own bird watching and orchid gardening business because I have the land and forest. I have collected different species of orchids which I planted in my own backyard,” he added.

Thanked God for PNG Highlands Exotic Tours who wishes to help me promote and market my new bird watching and orchid gardening, he said.

Upon visiting his sites at Anji village in Wapenamanda, the PNG Highlands Exotic Tours was impressed with the views and the perfect sightseeing of his orchid garden and the different species of bird which frequented his place. Marketing officer Peter Kinjap said the avenue provides a perfect opportunity to launch his own business. “Bird watching and orchid gardening for Max Mal is a prospective venture as a SME,” Mr. Kinjap added.

According to Mr. Mal some of the Birds of Paradise found in his yard at Angi Village at Wapendmanda are Superb, Ribbontail (Shaw Mayer’s), Brown Sicklebill and Crested.

The Bird of paradise is discovered to be originated from the Island of New Guinea. Of the forty-five (45) species found on the planet earth, only six are found elsewhere. Two in Indonesia, four in Australia and the rest is in PNG. Max Mal’s bird watching yard confirmed to have 11 species of the most popular Birds of Paradise but not the Reggiana Bird of Paradise.

The Bird of Paradise also signifies as the symbol of national identity. The national symbol of PNG is the Reggiana Bird of Paradise found both on the National Flag and the National Crest, found only in PNG ranging from the coastal rainforests to about 1,600 meters in many highlands valleys. Birds of paradise are some of the most remarkable creatures in the animal world. Not only are they magnifant looking but their display behaviors set them apart from virtually all other animals.

Other areas in the highlands where PNG Highlands Exotic Tours is eyeing to develop, identify, promote and market Bird Watching as ecotourism product are the forests near Mt. Giluwe from Tambul, the famous Baiyer Zoo Bird Sanctuary, currently renovated, and the forests of Kutubu area around Mt. Bosavi. In Mt. Giluwe there is also a story of a Singsing Wild Dog and in Mt. Bosavi there is a Giant Rat.

“Mr. Mal has registered his interest with PNG Highlands Exotic Tours for his tourist products to be marketed globally and we will help him to register a business name for what he is doing and provide guide he needs to start up as a SME,” Mr. Kinjap said.

So far two business groups and four individuals have register their interest with PNG Highlands Exotic Tours for tourism products marketing.

Barron Waterfalls Full Flood FEB 2015

Tropical North Queensland is experiencing the annual Monsoon or raining season, and this year, oh! how the rain came down. The Monsoon season is an annual event up here in Far North Queensland, every year we receive about 3/4 meters of rain!

The above video was taken on Sunday 15th FEB 2015 and just goes to show how much water we received over the weekend.

These large volumes of water attribute to the growth of the World Heritage listed National Parks of Barron George National Park, Cape Tribulation National Park. These rainforests strive on our hot humid damp conditions, along with the rain fall, this helps to sustain the forests during the dry season and into the following year.

Myself representing TUFI Resort in Papua New Guinea, we had the absolute pleasure of meeting allot of fantastic European Dive Wholesalers and thousands of lovely people from Düsseldorf.

The people of Düsseldorf turned out in there numbers with allot of specific pre-researched enquirers, a fantastic public response to diving in Papua New Guinea.

Read my latest article from my most recent trip Diving in Papua New Guinea.

Composing a round up video of the PNG dive team at BOOT 2015, if you have time please watch the short 3 min video above, the sound is not 100% it was filmed on a GoPro. We have since purchased a microphone to help with sound quality in the future.

Thank you to the Papua New Guinea Divers Association and The Tourism Promotion Authority for all of there assistance in co-ordination. With out the assistance of these organisations it would be impossible to attend these shows.

Also a big thank you to the people of Düsseldorf for making us feel so welcome. We all look forward to attending next years BOOT Show – Düsseldorf 2016!

Poseidon – Diving Agincourt Reef – Port Douglas Australia

Poseidon – Diving Agincourt Reef – Port Douglas Australia

Port Douglas Australia, what a name for a boat Poseidon. Who was this fella? Well according to Greek methodology he was God of the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses!

Awesome I like him already, a powerful God of the sea, why not name an awesome dive boat after him Poseidon Snorkel & Dive. Based in Port Douglas Australia Poseidon the boat resides at Marina Mirage. Departing daily at 8:30am in the morning expect a 1hour and 15min journey to arrive on the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs.

Located around 60klm off shore you can expect some of the regions best diving. Large walls, drift diving, and deep bommies that extend all the way to the surface.

Pick your weather make sure Posiedon the God, hasn’t wipped up a storm for you. With nice blue skies and beautiful conditions the dive crew on board Posiedon will have you in and diving your first deepest dive of the day. At around 24 meters what an awesome way to start your day, large beautiful corals, yellow tail barracuda, grey whaler sharks and many Moorish Idols.

Diving Great Barrier Reef Australia – Scuba Dive Cairns Video

Diving Great Barrier Reef Australia – Scuba Dive Cairns Video

Diving on The Great Barrier Reef Australia – We just finished filming with our GoPro2 and underwater red lens filter. Spending the day diving on the Great Barrier Reef is a wonderful experience, so many fish, colors and beautiful clear blue water.

We have created a small Scuba Dive video of our day spent with day reef tour company Silverswift Cruises. A tour boat that departs from Cairns in North Queensland. Departing Cairns at 8:30am in the morning it took approx 1 hour and 15 minutes to arrive at Flynn Reef. This is a beautiful reef structure of about 6 klm in circumference with an abundance of marine life living in this aquatic environment.

There are beautiful coral gardens up in the shallows, these must be really well protected for the coral growth is absolutely outstanding to say the least. Amazing bright colors, strong growth in all the different species and an abundance of reef fish, we even caught a glimpse of a nice little white tip reef shark.

Water temperature was about 23 degrees Celsius which is normal for September these are the winter months up here in Northern Australia. So a 3mm wet-suit with a shark skin is generally all you need for some nice comfortable diving.

Diving The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is a joy most people will only get to try once or twice, so if you are coming to Australia do yourself a favor come on up to Cairns and head on out to The Great Barrier Reef, see it with your own eyes, the only way to really get an idea of how big and amazing the world’s largest reef system really is.

If you have time check out Diving The Great Barrier Reef Australia – Scuba Dive Video Cairns, we hope it will inspire you to come and film your own Great Barrier Reef diving video.
